Poetry Outloud Winners Announced!

The English Department, would like to thank all who participated in this year's Poetry Out Loud competition. Also, big mahalo to everyone who came to support their classmates.

Poetry Outloud judges, Tuba Abbasi, Alice April, Dr. Catherine Barale, and David Reynolds scored the following students on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, overall performance, and accuracy. The winner will compete in in the state finals, and three runners-up will be standing by if needed.

First place goes to Emily Threlkeld '16, second place to Kenz Hubbard '18, third to Carolyn Price '17, and fourth to Micah Asuncion '18.

Mahalo to coordinators Dave Reynolds and Nicole Street for organizing this event, and to yearbook photographers Maureen Valdez '17, and Pierce Bivens '19, for coming out to take photos of this event.

HTY Offering Ethan Shell Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Ethan Shell Scholarship! Talented high school seniors or 1st year college students on Kaua‘i planning on attending college to pursue a formal education in performing arts are welcome to apply. Applications are due April 15, 2016.

The Ethan Shell Scholarship is an award of up to $1,000. For criteria, information about Ethan Shell and past scholarship recipients, should download the application at their website. Hawai‘i Childrens Theatre.

Chorus Room Parent/s Wanted

HELP WANTED: Chorus Room Parent/s. Responsible for recruiting and managing volunteers for tasks associated with the chorus and its various programs and events. The Chorus Parent does not have to do everything, but solicits other parents to volunteer. Volunteers participate in activities such as collecting forms, setting up wardrobe fittings, distributing shirts and other wardrobe, making phone calls/sending emails, making/finding props or costume accessories, moving equipment, and organizing/coordinating end-of-year parties. Baby Monk Seal Naming & Poetry Contest - for 4th & 5th Graders

In June of 2015, renown fabric artist Evelyn Roth created two inflatable Hawaiian Monk Seal Classrooms for Storybook Theatre. These two monk seals will tour the islands visiting classrooms around the state to teach children about these amazing endangered mammals. Kauai Children in grades 4 & 5 are invited to name our two Monk Seal Inflatables. 

All entries must include the following:
1.) The names you would give to the monk seals. 
2.) An explanation of why those names were chosen and what they mean (especially if using the Hawaiian Language).
3.) A poem or short story about the seals (please make sure to include name & contact info on your entry).
4.) This form must also be completed and accompany the entry.
-DEADLINE: JANUARY 22nd, 2016. Winners will be notified by February 5th.

Winners will receive a $25 cash prize and an appearance on the Russell the Rooster Show to show off their winning entry. Winning entries will also receive a visit from the inflatables for their class.
