Big News! Nā Pua Keiki is Expanding!

Through an agreement reached between Kaua‘i Community College and Island School, Nā Pua Keiki will open at its new site on the Kaua‘i Community College campus this fall under the direction and management of Island School. This partnership serves both institutions well, as it allows Island School to expand its pre-kindergarten program, while offering KCC the lab school it needs for its Early Childhood Education Associate's Degree program.
Island School will manage the curriculum under the direction of Nā Pua Keiki teacher, Sue Macklin. Assisting will be Keana Oliveira, who has been working with the class for three years. Two additional teachers will be added over the summer. Spaces will be reserved for children of KCC faculty, staff and students, who will be joined with currently enrolled Island School students.

A defining feature of the facility is its role as a lab school. Early Childhood Education students from KCC will continue to have a model classroom in which to learn their craft as teachers.
The KCC facility was closed in 2013 for renovations and re-opened in February of 2015 with a new coat of paint, new windows, floors and furniture. There are two classrooms, a kitchenette and two playground areas for the children.
"This is a fantastic opportunity," said Ms. Sue of the relocation. "There will be many 'field trips' to the Island School campus to the gardens, playground, Wilcox Gymnasium, and to visit our Big Buddies, the fifth graders." Sue also added that Island School high school students interested in teaching will continue to have the opportunity to intern in the pre-kindergarten class.

Applications for fall enrollment are now being accepted. As always, students must be between the ages of two years and eight months and five years. Interested families are invited to schedule a visit by calling the Island School office at 246-0233.
