First Graders Create Outdoor Art

First grade students created an interesting outdoor art piece on Friday, under the instruction of substitute teacher Jill Weiner. The class studied the work of artists Christo and Jeanne Claude, whose unusual wrapped art had a profound influence on modern sculpture. Students used colorful crepe paper streamers to wrap the trunks of trees behind the art room. The purpose of the lesson was to familiarize them with a movement in art history and to help them to look at everyday things in a different way. Here are some photographs of their work.
