Remembering Margo Latif

We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of one of our graduates, Margo Latif, class of 2014. The legacy of Margo's passion and energy still resonates here at Island School.

Margo was the daughter of Sheree and Mike Latif of KÄ«lauea. She attended Island School from seventh - twelfth grade. She was active in Student Government, serving as Jr. Class Representative and Student Body President in her senior year. She was Interact Club President and a member of National Honor Society. She was in Island School Singers and was awarded the Chorus Spirit Award by her peers. Margo played soccer and was captain of the team in her senior year. She also played tennis. She was awarded the National Honor Society Character Award by her peers and the Island School Spirit of the Scientist Award.

An accomplished singer, composer and pianist, Margo received the Overall Talent Award at the High School Talent Competition for two years in a row.

Margo was a sophomore at Whittier College in Whittier, California. She was majoring in political science, with a focus on foreign policy.

As an active member of chorus throughout high school, and a participant in the all-state chorus for many years, Margo made a lasting impression on Island School’s choral program. This weekend, Island School students have joined chorus students from across Hawai‘i at the 2016 Na Leo Hou Hawai'i All-State Choral Festival on O'ahu. The entire all-state chorus honored Margo this morning with a moment of silence. The Island School Alaka'i Chorus, of which Margo was a member, will dedicate its performance to her tomorrow night at Central Union Church.

Today, to remember her, the high school student body gathered on the soccer field for a moment of silence led by Adie Siebring.

In her honor, Island School will hold a tribute at a later date, to be announced.
