Shannon Graves to Step Into Role as Head of School

The Island School Board of Directors is pleased to announce that L Shannon Graves will be joining Island School as our new Head of School, beginning this summer. Shannon and his family are excited to be joining the Island School ‘Ohana.

Shannon & Maria Graves

This has been an extensive process and we truly believe we have found the right person to lead the school as we move forward. Bob will be working with Shannon in the weeks to come to ensure a smooth transition.

A special thanks goes to Mary Capwell, chair of the Search Committee, for her excellent leadership in guiding us through the eight months of hard and tireless work. Thanks also to the rest of the committee: Kathy Richardson, Sam Pratt, Peter King, Joan Shaw, Peggy Ellenburg, Jim Bray, Leah Edwards, Chris Ing and Alice Pajela. They spent many hours working diligently to find the right person to lead Island School as our next Head.

The members of the Advisory Committee are also to be thanked for their support and guidance starting back in July. Thank you also to the faculty, staff, parents and alumni who joined in the Meet and Greet meetings and for the helpful feedback you provided the Search Committee and the Board of Directors. This was truly a team effort!

Love Was In The Air For Spanish Students

For el Día de San Valentín, Señora Summerhays' Spanish classes created amazing, funny, and creative poems about pairs of things that cannot be without each other. Here are some favorites:

"Yo sin ti" Bulletin Board

“Yo sin ti" / "Me without You” is like …
  • un iPhone sin encargador / an iPhone without a charger
  • FC Barcelona sin Messi / Barcelona without Messi
  • el arcoiris sin lluvia / a rainbow without rain
  • los adolescentes sin comida / teenagers without food
  • el amor sin amistad / love without friendship
  • la comida sin sabor / food without flavor
  • la vida sin sentido / life without meaning
  • Señora Sullivan sin ciencias / Mrs. Sullivan without science
  • Señor Evslin sin computadoras / Mr. Evslin without computers

Hiking Club Visits Ulu Farm

The elementary Hiking Club visited the Ulu Farm last week for their last club meeting.
They hiked from campus to the entrance to Grove Farm's land next to Island School and KCC. They were met by Eric Hansen, the coordinator of Go Farm Hawai‘i at KCC. Eric led the group of 3rd-5th graders through the gate by the bee hives and they were escorted about a mile or so into Grove Farm's Ulu Farm. There they saw 64 ulu trees planted in a several acre area. The trees are expected to bear fruit in about two years. They are protected by a chain link fence.

Eric Hansen talks about the Ulu plant with the Hiking Club.
Hiking Club leader, Sabra Kauka was able to gain access to this site through Sean Magoun, who got permission from Tim Stuck, an Island School parent. Tim is in charge of this project for Grove Farm. Many thanks to Tim and to Eric for enriching our students. Eric captured the hikers' attention, and he invited them to visit the KCC Farm when it can be arranged.
