Students Visit Makaloa Mat at Kaua‘i Museum

Kumu Kauka took her Hawaiian Studies classes to the Kaua‘i Museum to see the makaloa mat this week. Grades 3, 4 & 5, went on Monday and grades K-2 went Wednesday.

The makaloa mat is the finest mat made in the Pacific. The plant is now quite rare but was recently reintroduced to the Pūʻali Wetlands in Niumalu.

The trip was funded by a donation from the Island School Alumni Association (ISAA).
