Students to See Makaloa Mat at Kaua‘i Museum
Kumu Kauka is making arrangements with Kaua‘i Museum for her elementary classes to see the makaloa mat in their collection. The makaloa mat is the finest mat made in the Pacific. The plant is now quite rare but was recently reintroduced to the Pūʻali Wetlands in Niumalu.
Rosie and Sabra are teaching the students the Oli Mahalo, a chant expressing gratitude. The makaloa mat is mentioned in the first line of that chant. It is a symbol of the highest hospitality.
The trip is planned for grades 3, 4 & 5, for Monday, Dec. 14, and for K, 1 & 2, on Wednesday, Dec. 16,during their normal Hawaiian Studies classes.
