Programs for High School Students from Senator Brian Schatz

Senator Brian Schatzʻs office offers the following opportunities to Hawai‘i high school students. For applications and more information, visit their website: www.schatz.senate.gov

High School Senior Internship Program:
This program provides a hands-on learning opportunity about the U.S. Senate, creates a forum for students to share issues and information with the Senator and his staff, and encourages students to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities. Activities will involve working with outreach staff, identifying issues of interest in their school and community, and attending and staffing special events. This is not an office position and students should miss little or no class time in performing the tasks or assignments related to the program. Applications must be completed no later than 5:59 p.m. September 18, 2015.

U.S. Service Academy Appointments
Senator Schatz has the honor and privilege of nominating exceptional students from the state of Hawai‘i for appointment to the United States Service Academies. An official nomination is required for admission to each of the Service Academies except the United States Coast Guard Academy.
Due to a competitive and thorough selection process, students are encouraged to apply to their congressional sponsors and service academies in the spring of their junior year. Students in their senior year will also be considered. Applications are due by 5:59 p.m. on October 30, 2015.

U.S. Senate Youth Program
This provides an opportunity for two Hawai‘i high school juniors or seniors to attend a week-long government and leadership education program in Washington, D.C. Student delegates will hear major policy addresses by Senators, cabinet members, and officials from federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5000 College Scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.
