7th Graders Learn Sailing

The 7th grade class recently completed an introduction to sailing class with the Kaua‘i Sailing Association at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club. The students experienced and learned some fundamentals of sailing including points of sail, knot tying, vessel terminology as well as how to rig, capsize and right an 11 foot Topper sailing dinghy.

The 7th graders were avid and fast learners and not afraid to have a blast while learning! Many of the students were brave and able enough to take the helm and dock their boat. Not an easy task!

In the future, we hope to include an eight class basic sailing course within the PE curriculum. Completion of this course will produce Island School students qualified to solo sail Topper sail boats.

So much fun!!
