Head Search Update

From Mary Capwell, Head Search Committee Chair:

After two months of "passive sourcing" (advertising) and "active sourcing" (sending emails, writing letters and making phone calls) the application period for our new Head of School closed on Wednesday, November 26. The Search Committee is pleased to report that it has received a total of 69 applications from candidates in seven countries, twenty-two states and one US territory. To say that the applications have been interesting is an understatement; we have been very fortunate to be able to consider so many candidates whose backgrounds include a wide and rich variety of experiences.

The Search Committee has already narrowed the field to several semi-finalists and, at our upcoming meeting on Dec. 2, will identify more to join that group, for a projected total of twelve. All twelve semi-finalists will be interviewed by the entire Search Committee during the weekends of Dec 6-7 and Dec. 13-14 using Skype (even if they are local; the"level playing field" concept is at work here) and three finalists will be identified at the conclusion of that process.

Three finalists will be invited on-island in January. Each individual will attend a series of social events where they will be introduced to Island School's constituent groups, including the Head of School Advisory Committee, administration, faculty and staff, parents, students and alumni. Most importantly, they will be interviewed by the Board of Directors, who will make the selection of the next Head of School in late January/early February.

As we move through these next phases of the search, I want to recognize and commend the great work of the ten-member Search Committee. They have been diligent in their close review of each application, faithful in attending bi-weekly meetings and thoughtful in their deliberations. We are indeed fortunate to have such dedicated individuals who are so committed to the task of searching for best individual to lead Island School.
More information will be coming in mid-December. Stay tuned!
