MS Chorus Students Learn About the Koto

On Friday, Miss Rosie taught middle school students in the Island School
'Opio Chorus about the koto. The koto is a six foot stringed instrument,
similar to the Chinese zheng. The koto, with thirteen strings, is the
national instrument of Japan. Miss Rosie taught students about the history
of the instrument and its usage as well as specific techniques for tuning
and playing it. Miss Rosie learned to play the koto when she attended
school in Japan as part of a Rotary Club exchange program during her junior
year in high school. Many middle school students took advantage of the
opportunity to compose their own songs using a basic pentatonic scale.
